Carol Martineau was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. She attended Syracuse University where she met her husband Alexander Rae Baldwin Jr. of Brooklyn, New York. After college graduation, the couple married and moved to Massapequa, Long Island where they raised their six children, including the four Baldwin brothers — Alec, Daniel, William, and Stephen of stage, screen, and television fame — and daughters Elizabeth and Jane. After the death of her husband In 1983, Carol decided to move back to Syracuse to be closer to her family. In 1990, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer requiring a double mastectomy followed by months of aggressive treatment. She suff ered through numerous complications and setbacks which nearly took her life. She persevered through the diffi cult times and came out on the other side stronger than she was before. She decided to rally her newfound strength and join the fi ght against breast cancer.

Initially, Carol took on a leadership role in the founding of the fi rst Susan G. Komen Foundation chapter in Central New York. Then, along with fellow breast cancer activists, she spearheaded the Long Island Mapping Project. In recognition of her dedication to the cause, Stony Brook University named its new breast cancer diagnostic and treatment facility the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center. Then, in 1996, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund was established to support local breast cancer research on Long Island. To date, the fund has given over 100 research grants totaling over 5 million dollars to the Stony Brook Cancer Center. Several years later, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY was established to support breast cancer research at SUNY Upstate Medical University near Carol’s Upstate New York home.

Carol dedicated over 25 years of her life working tirelessly to help raise funds in support of breast cancer research. Even in her later years, when she could no longer carry out her more active duties, Carol continued to support the cause by assisting with event planning and reaching out to women battling breast cancer. Carol’s 6 children remain active with the fund serving on both the Downstate and Upstate boards. The entire Baldwin family is committed to carrying out Carol’s mission stated best in her famous motto, “Together We Will Find A Cure.”
